As far as furnace-mounted humidifiers go, there are many different brands but only a few types or styles that are effective at providing your home with the necessary humidity (controlled moist air). For the most part, three designs are worthy of consideration. Your choice; some do it better and some require less maintenance. They are drum and sponge, flow-through and a rotary disc configuration.
You will probably be familiar with the once ubiquitous drum humidifier with its usually yellow foam pad. This pad or sponge is attached to a rotating wheel that dips into a small reservoir of water, regulated by a ‘float’ and warm air from the furnace is passed through the yellow pad and picks up moisture. This air is then blown through your home’s duct work when the furnace fan is engaged. Checking the condition of the sponge often is a necessity. A crusty deposit will accumulate and the system will lose its effectiveness.
Drums are still popular – and are an inexpensive solution. Flow-through humidifiers are better. Attached to a floor drain in the furnace room, they allow a regulated stream of water to drip down a metal or plastic screen; warm air then blows through the screen, picks up moisture and delivers to the home. An improvement, to be sure, but preventative maintenance is still required.
Introduced in the 1990s is a revolutionary yet simple, 100% water efficient and low maintenance rotary disc system. Enclosed in a protective cover this humidifier incorporates a wheel assembly composed of plastic discs. These textured disks travel through a reservoir of water contained in a tray. The discs are low maintenance and consequently, the humidifier performs admirably and efficiently.
